‘From Here to There’
- an exhibition of paintings, prints and ceramics by Jan Calow, Elizabeth Fortescue, Barbara Green, Mandi St Clair and Sue Warren.
“I only just saw this exhibition by the skin of my teeth – managing a visit on the last day. I parked the car in Anning Road to miss the bank holiday congestion, and enjoyed a pleasant walk down the river to the Mill in the sunshine. And how glad I am I didn’t miss it – a series of landscapes, abstracts and views in ravishing colours. One of the exhibitors, Elizabeth Fortescue, was stewarding, and she told me “The four of us all paint together from time to time” – and it was interesting to see how there were obvious influences one on the other – the result was a very cohesive and satisfying display on the walls, where one could admire the overall themes of local landscape and what lies beneath, but also see the individuality of each painter’s view of the world. Having just five exhibitors meant there was plenty of wall-space to see a body of work by each artist, and yet see the connections between them.
The paintings and prints were complemented by Mandi St Clair’s coolly beautiful ceramics in subtle unglazed parian, and delicate celadon glazes, recalling the marks left on the shore by wind and wave, and just inviting the viewer to pick them up and run fingers over the surface. As a potter myself, I admired both the elegance and skill that had gone into making these.” – Lois Wakeman
